FAQ & Troubleshooting

Why are my changes not showing in emails?
If you made changes in the editor but they do not appear in your Shopify notification emails, try these steps in order: 1. Wait 10 seconds — Changes take a few seconds to reach Shopify 2. Hard refresh the preview — in Shopify Notifications, press Ctrl+Shift+R (Cmd+Shift+R on Mac) 3. Check if you need to re-export — structural changes (adding/removing sections, switching preset) require a new export 4. Send a real test order — Shopify's preview can be cached. A real order always shows the latest state. || Note: Text, colors, buttons, footer, and marketing sections go live instantly. Only structural changes need a re-export. See "What changes go live instantly?" for the full list. If the issue persists, contact our support team with a screenshot.
Email Looks Different From Preview
Preview vs Reality The editor preview shows a close approximation of how your email will look. However, email clients (Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail) each have their own rendering rules. Common Differences - Outlook — may add extra spacing around images and tables - Gmail — clips emails longer than 102 KB - Dark Mode — Smart Emails includes matching color declarations, but individual clients can still apply their own inversion rules If you notice a significant difference, send support the template name, receiving email client and version, device, light/dark setting, and a screenshot. A real Shopify notification is more conclusive than a browser-only preview.
How do I send a test email?
You can send a test directly from the Smart Emails editor before or after installing the template in Shopify. Send from Smart Emails 1. Open the template you want to test. 2. Click Send Test. 3. Enter the recipient email address. 4. Send the message and wait for the confirmation. 5. Check the inbox and spam folder. Delivery can take a few minutes depending on the receiving mail server. Smart Emails saves the latest editor state before generating the test. The test uses preview data, so it is suitable for checking layout, colors, images, links, mobile behavior, and dark mode. Preview in Shopify 1. Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Notifications 2. Click on a template 3. Click Preview to see how it looks Test Shopify's real notification After installation, create a Shopify test order or trigger the relevant real notification. This verifies Shopify's notification event, customer locale, Liquid data, and final subject line in addition to the design. || Tip: Test both the Smart Emails preview message and a real Shopify notification. They validate different parts of the delivery chain.
How do I go back to Shopify's default emails?
If you want to revert a template to Shopify's original design: 1. Go to Shopify Admin → Settings → Notifications 2. Click on the template you want to revert 3. Click Revert to default This removes the Smart Emails code and restores Shopify's built-in template. You can re-export from Smart Emails anytime to apply your design again.
Do I need to keep Smart Emails installed?
Yes. Smart Emails needs to stay installed for live changes to work. Why? After the initial export, Smart Emails synchronizes supported live settings and translations with Shopify. If you uninstall the app, these updates stop and the uninstall cleanup removes Smart Emails Metafields and registered email-body translations. What happens if I uninstall? - The primary HTML previously pasted into Shopify is not automatically replaced with Shopify's default template - Smart Emails Metafield values and definitions are removed - Smart Emails body_html translations are removed - Design sets, settings, and export history are removed from the Smart Emails database as part of the cleanup and later Shopify data-redaction process - Reinstalling starts a new setup; it does not automatically restore the deleted design If you want to stop the paid plan but keep the app and its design data, cancel the subscription instead of uninstalling Smart Emails. || Before uninstalling, restore Shopify's default templates or keep a separate copy of any HTML you may need later.
Can I use Smart Emails for newsletters or marketing emails?
No. Smart Emails is designed for Shopify notification emails only — the transactional emails that Shopify sends automatically (order confirmations, shipping updates, returns, etc.). For marketing emails and newsletters, use Shopify Email or a dedicated email marketing app like Klaviyo, Omnisend, or Mailchimp.
How Does Auto-Save Work?
Smart Emails saves editor changes automatically. There is no regular Save button. Save timing After you stop editing, the editor normally waits about two seconds and writes the current design to the Smart Emails database. Some editor actions force a save immediately, including workflows that must generate current output. What is saved Auto-Save stores the template sections, content, global colors, typography, buttons, footer, Shop Links, banner, marketing settings, layout, and other design values belonging to the design set. Shopify synchronization Supported live settings are also synchronized to Shopify Metafields. This is a separate operation and can finish shortly after the database save. Closing the editor Wait until the saving indicator has finished before closing the editor, exporting, or changing pages. Smart Emails also uses safe load gates so an incomplete editor load cannot overwrite an existing saved design. || Auto-Save does not remove the need for a new primary export after structural changes such as adding, deleting, or moving sections.
Undo and Redo
The editor keeps a history of recent design snapshots so you can reverse a change and restore it again. Keyboard shortcuts - Undo: Ctrl+Z on Windows or Linux, Cmd+Z on macOS - Redo: Ctrl+Shift+Z on Windows or Linux, Cmd+Shift+Z on macOS - Alternative redo on Windows: Ctrl+Y Undo and redo buttons are also available in the editor toolbar. What can be restored History snapshots include the current template structure and the relevant design settings. They can cover actions such as changing colors, editing section settings, applying a preset, moving sections, or deleting a section. Session limits Undo history belongs to the current editor session and has a fixed maximum size. Reloading the editor or switching to another saved context can reset the available history. Undo is not a replacement for a named design save slot. When you undo and then make a new change, the previous redo path is discarded.
